Building your first hair routine (without buying the whole aisle)

By CurlCart · Updated October 1, 2026

Quick truth: you don't need every step a hair quiz shows you. Our four-step routine is a shopping list to organize your options, not a rulebook. Start with what's already in your shower and fill one gap at a time.

Get washing and conditioning right first

Ask yourself how often you wash, how your hair feels afterward, and whether your conditioner makes detangling easy. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests matching how often you wash to your hair and scalp, and using conditioner. Its curly-hair advice leans on moisture and gentle detangling.

Add a styler when you want something specific

Want more hold, more definition or a different finish? That's when a styler earns its spot. A leave-in is optional too. Add one new product at a time so you can actually tell what made the difference.

Do the budget math

The budget in the quiz is per product. Four products at about $12 each is roughly $48 before tax and shipping. Check the size and the price at checkout, since a smaller bottle can look cheaper but cost more per ounce.

Treat your results as a shortlist

Pick every texture you have, set your per-product budget, and only add ingredient filters if they really matter to you. If you see fewer than four steps, that just means our catalog can't confirm every step for those answers yet. It doesn't mean your hair needs fewer products.

One more thing: we haven't personally tried every product here. Our picks come from the product information we can check.
